Description
Lower Ivy cottage is a lovely traditional limestone cottage in a super position on the edge of Youlgreave with wonderful views over Bradford Dale. Dating from the 18th century, the cottage now provides modern facilities whilst retaining all its character with quarry tiled and slate floors, a mellow pine dresser, wood burning stove and other original features.
Bradford Dale is a picturesque location and as you wander along the footpath you will see kingfishers, herons and dippers playing in the river as it splashes down the valley. Up in Youlgreave itself, you will find a 'real' village with high quality butcher and general store, post office and pubs. The village has an attractive Georgian main street and one of the finest 15th century churches in Derbyshire.
Walks fan out from the cottage in every direction over the Peak District hills and a short drive will take you to Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Bakewell with its 'puddings' and Matlock Bath in its breathtaking gorge. For the kids there is water rafting, go-karting, cable cars, steam trains, caverns and castles.
Ground Floor:
Porch: with seating.
Sitting Room: with three piece suite, oak gate-leg dining table and chairs, wood burning stove (initial basket of logs provided), TV with free Sky channels, DVD player, stereo system, WiFi and door to the patio.
Kitchen: with gas cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, dishwasher and a small breakfast table and folding chairs. A washing machine is located in a cupboard under the stairs.
Shower Room: with walk in shower enclosure, WC and basin.
First Floor:
Bedroom 1: a double bedroom with en suite WC and basin, and wonderful views down the dale.
Bedroom 2: a twin bedroom also with superb views.
OUTSIDE:
There is a cottage garden and patio with garden furniture and views across the dale. Loading and unloading is possible on the lane at the end of the path to cottage and on-street parking is available nearby, either further along the lane or by the river 100 yards down the hill.
Young children to be supervised in the garden, where there is a low stone wall and drop down into the lane.
As there are internal steps in the cottage as well as a steep staircase, the cottage is not suitable for guests with limited mobility.
Location
YOULGREAVE
The beautiful village of Youlgreave stands high above Bradford Dale and Lathkill Dale with the clear, sparkling rivers running through the valleys below. The wide banks of the River Bradford are a perfect spot for a picnic. Or walk south-east to the gritstone outcrop of Robin Hood’s Stride and on to Stanton Moor, a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument featuring more than 70 barrows and 4 stone circles, the best known of which is Nine Ladies. Youlgreave is truly situated in an ancient landscape. Three miles west of the village is Arbor Low, one of the largest Neolithic henges in England.
Today, Youlgreave is a bustling, popular village with a range of shops, cafes, a post office and pubs.
Nearby is Bakewell, the main tourist town of the Peak District with its Bakewell Puddings made to a secret recipe. It’s also just a short drive to magnificent Chatsworth House or the more homely Haddon Hall. Don’t forget to visit Caudwell’s water powered flour mill with its vegetarian café and craft shop or the award-winning Chatsworth Farm Shop.
Local Pubs: The Bulls Head, Youlgreave. The Farmyard Inn, Youlgreave
